Travel Can Make You a Better Person

This is a guest post from Josie Simpson

People travel for thousands of reasons…to see the world, to get away from reality or simply to treat themselves to a little break. With all that in mind, there are 5 ways that travel can make you a better person. Let’s explore!

Travel Can Make You a Better Person

You’ll break out of your shell

Is there a better opportunity to push yourself out of your comfort zone? Travelling – especially travelling alone – forces you to throw caution to the wind and get yourself out there into the world. From meeting new people to getting to grips with the language, there’s nothing quite like the sense of accomplishment you’ll feel after you’ve done it. If you need to, fake the confidence you need to take the trip in the first place and you’ll never regret it!

You’ll soak up new experiences and adventures

When we’re away from home, most of us will naturally get that ‘holiday feeling’; the excuse we need to try things we wouldn’t dream of doing at home. Whether you ease yourself in by tasting that weird looking dish on the restaurant menu or go full steam with a bungee jump somewhere exotic, travelling is the perfect excuse to take the plunge. After all, nobody knows who you are in ‘real’ life anyway!

You’ll cope well under pressure

Missed your flight? Don’t speak the language? Never fear! Travelling forces you to cope with whatever the world throws at you; it’s that fight-or-flight instinct. Soon enough, you’ll be a dab hand at staying strong under pressure, realising that the beauty of life is that it never goes according to plan. And hey, it’s often those places you didn’t plan to go to or those things that you didn’t account for that turn out to be the most memorable.

You’ll travel yourself interesting

It’s safe to say that when you get back from travelling, you won’t be the same person you were before you left. With all of those memories, experiences and achievements under your belt, you’re bound to feel more worldly, more cultured and generally like a more interesting person. The Travel Yourself Interesting campaign from Expedia UK is all about that feeling, showing you that travel is all about the fun and crazy things you learn along the way.

You’ll escape the mundane

We’ve all heard someone claim that ‘travel sharpens the mind’ but the truth is, it really does! Travelling gives you the chance to cut yourself free from the habitual nature of everyday life and get out into the world and explore. Getting away from the daily grind and spending some quality time alone means that when you return, it’ll be with a renewed sense of perspective towards your own life. You’ll feel rested, inspired to take on new challenges and ready to face the day.

So are you ready to travel your way to the top?

  1. Hi Josie,
Travelling enriches us most because we get to meet various cultures and people.
Its a learning experience, besides being entertaining and enriching as well.We learn to tolerate a lot that we dont understand about others through travel.
When we interact with people we need to be sure about what value we can gain by our interaction with them. Not an avaricious, greedy grab and run attitude of using and throwing people ;but an attitude of simultaneous humility and strength which urges us to find meaning in the most innocuous interaction with every one around us.By the way “interaction” also includes our thoughts, our memories, and our expectations of others.
    Thanks
    Mona

  2. Hi Josie,

Travelling to other countries has taught me to appreciate and be thankful for what I have in my own country.

    Regards,
    Edmund

  3. All of these things are true. My time traveling to other countries have had a profound impact on me. Things are so different in other countries and at the same time people are very similar and just want their basic needs met. Thanks for the post.

    1. That’s awesome to hear Seb. I always feel I grow as a person when I travel… just seeing the world from a different perspective can make life just feel so different!
